What is a screw-type compressor?

For a small business, such as car-garages, smaller factories, etc., a twin-screw compressor is the natural next choice when a piston compressor can no longer meet your operations’ requirement for compressed air. A rotary screw compressor typically runs quieter than a piston compressor. 

A screw compressor has a higher duty cycle which allows continuous running, compared to a piston compressor that typically needs to break in the running not to fail. So when it comes to selecting a compressor for a start-up, a growing business or a large manufacturing plant, a Mark screw compressor will meet your needs.

 

Working principle of a screw compressor

How does a screw air compressor work? Simplistically a screw compressor has a male rotor and a female rotor that rotate in the opposite direction. As they rotate, the space between the rotors decreases and forces the air to compress.

Different types of screw air compressors

Belt-drive: where there is a belt that connects the motor with the compression unit.
Gear-drive: the connection between the compression unit and the motor uses gears; this is more efficient than the belt-driven.
Variable speed drive: is the most efficient type of compressor. The motor and the compression element are synchronized to produce compressed air as close as possible to the application's actual demand.

For settings like garages, DIY or smaller workshops, piston compressors are an ideal solution. They are cost effective and easy to move around. However, when your industry demands a high volume capacity compressor, rotary screw compressors are definitely the better choice. That’s why they are most commonly used in the bigger industries, like automated manufacturing.

You need a continuous airflow

In many industries, like for instance the automotive industry or food processing industry, there is a need for a compressor that can deliver a continuous airflow. Piston compressors heat up due to their internal combustion: they need a cool-down period from time to time. That way they are not able to produce a constant airflow.

Rotary screw compressors have a very low internal temperature. Therefore they can supply a constant airflow. No heating issues, no breaks. Definitely an advantage when you are using your compressor constantly. 

You want an energy-efficient solution

It all depends on your demands of course: a piston compressor might still be the right choice if you don’t need a constant airflow or a high volume capacity. In that case choosing a piston compressor might be more cost-efficient and energy-efficient.

You want a compressor with a long lifespan

Rotary screw compressors are less likely to break down due to mechanical failure, since its components are different from a piston compressor. They do not operate through a valve system, nor are they likely to overheat.

Rotary screw compressors are in fact built to last - definitely in combination with the right maintenance. They will serve you for many years, while having little or no capacity reduction. Considering the fact that they can operate 24/7 on full power, this is quite a feat. 

You want a compressor that produces less noise

Rotary screw compressors are, in contrast to piston compressors, relatively silent. The rotors that compress the air are not in contact with each other, thus producing little noise. In some settings this might definitely be considered an advantage. When a constant airflow is needed it might be very important that the compressor operates quietly: that way your employees don’t have to work in a loud environment.

Piston compressors produce more noise, but that might not be a problem when they are not operated constantly. Everything depends on the actual conditions and demands of your industry.
