We’ve already talked about the different uses of rotary screw compressors. In this article we’d like to zoom in on the reasons why a rotary screw compressor needs oil to operate, and why oil filters are essential for some industries.
Because of the heat of the compression process, as well as the constant movement, lubrication is needed. Oil therefore has several functions:
Oil also helps to avoid possible leakage in the compression chamber.
You can also choose a screw compressor that does not use oil to lubricate/cool the compressor element. These oil-free lubricated compressors are light and cheaper, but less durable and less useful for industrial applications.
But what if you need the durability and performance of an oil-lubricated screw compressor, but don’t want to risk oil contaminating your end product?
Different industries, like the pharmaceutical or food processing industry can't run the risk of oil contaminating the end product. On the other hand, oil lubricated compressors are ideal for their purposes: they are durable and able to handle a continuous air flow and have a high capacity and volume.
Oil filters are ideal to make sure no oil (or other particles, like dirt or dust) are left in the end stages of the compressing process. They are easily installed and make sure your end product complies with all necessary health regulations.
Oil filters are particularly needed in industries where contamination is a problem. However, you could also choose a screw compressor that does not use oil to lubricate/cool the compressor element. These oil-free lubricated compressors are light and cheaper, but less durable and less useful for industrial applications.
