Picking the right compressor for your needs

Everything starts with picking the right compressor. In some cases, reciprocating (or piston) compressors are the best choice. In other cases, you might need a rotary compressor. So the first question you should ask yourself is: what type is ideal for me?

How to use an air compressor: getting started

In this section we’ll give you some pointers on getting started and how to use an air compressor properly.

Read the manual

Sounds a bit redundant, no? But the thing is: every manufacturer adds important information to the manual. This includes:

  • maintenance protocols;

  • required compressor oils;

  • safety regulations;

  • installation and assembly information;

  • warranty stipulations.

Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on all these fields. Not complying might result in a warranty problem. For instance, some manufactures won’t agree with your warranty claim when you don’t use the recommended compressor oil. By reading the manual, you’re positive that you’re complying with all regulations. That way you can keep your people safe and lengthen the lifespan of your air compressor.

Positioning the air compressor

Depending on the type of compressor, you will need to choose the best location to put it. For the most part, MARK offers industrial screw compressors. This means that they will be professionally installed. Our installation professionals will adhere to all these points:

  • Some air compressors are loud. In this case we make sure that they are placed in a soundproof location, or in a place where noise isn’t an issue.

  • What with the temperature? Some compressors can handle extreme temperatures, others can’t. Air compressors also generate heat themselves: the right ventilation is key. This will also be covered during installation.

  • We make sure safety regulations are met: is there enough room around the compressor so maintenance can go as planned? What with local safety regulations?

Our professionals also include a service schedule that makes sure that all maintenance is up to par with the service running hours.

How to use an air compressor: oil and air intake

After positioning the air compressor, it’s time to check the oil gauge and air intake filter. Maintenance personnel should do this before every use, and not just when they first start using it.

The oil in your compressor provides the necessary lubrication of all moving parts. By checking the oil sight gauge on your air compressor, we can make sure that there is sufficient oil. If it isn’t filled to the mark more oil should be added. Periodical oil changes are also included in our service schedule.

Air intake filters are there to make sure that no contaminants or debris gets into the air compressor when they take in air. Is the filter in place? Is it clean? To ensure maximum efficiency, the air intake filter should be cleaned after about three days of use. It has to be replaced when it can’t be cleaned efficiently anymore, or there are holes or rips in the fabric.

How to use an air compressor: moisture and drainage

Every air compressor is prone to taking up moisture. Moreover: moisture is inevitable when using your compressor. Make sure all moisture is drained before you start using your compressor.

Have your drain valves checked regularly to ensure no moisture enters the inside of your air compressor. We also offer automatic drain valves that automatically drain moisture without intervention. However, regular service and maintenance is still essential to prolong the lifespan of your air compressors.
